[1] This set of two inscriptions was inscribed on one of the numerous allocated seats in the theatre of Dionysos at Athens (on the seats for priests, officials, and honorands in this theatre see IG II³ 4, 1938). This marble "throne" was located in the fourth spot of the fourth wedge of seating from the north and was engraved on two different occasions. Inscription I was partially erased and only the first line of its text was left readable. Letter forms indicate that it was originally inscribed in the fourth or third century BC. The erasure probably took place to make way for the Inscription II, which reassigned the seat to a priest of Antinoos "the Dancer" belonging to an association of artists (i.e. musical performers). Antinoos was the young lover of the Emperor Hadrian, who drowned in Egypt in 130 AD and was deified throughout the Roman Empire. The inscription should belong around this date. The association of artists is also known from a dossier of letters written by Hadrian and Antoninus Pius (SEG 30.86 with notes).
