[1] This inscription is known only from notes taken by K. S. Pittakos in the 19th century and passed via Augustus Boeckh to Johannes Kirchner (author of IG II²), apparently without information on the findspot or shape of the monument. The text seems to recount how Hadrian funded the completion of the Temple of Olympian Zeus in 132 AD, which had been under construction since 515 BC (hence "repaired" rather than "built" in l.3). On the temple, see IG II² 3290 with notes and R. Tölle-Kastenbein, Das Olympieion in Athen (1994). Since Hadrian is called a god, the inscription probably post-dates his death in 138 AD. The chairman of works cannot be identified, but he appears to have been the dadouch, one of the two most senior priests of the Eleusinian cult, which indicates the importance attached to the project. The length of the lines suggests that the inscription was a herm or statue base rather than a stele or architectural fragment. If it was a statue or herm, it is unlikely to have depicted Hadrian or the chairman of the works, since both their names are given in the genitive case rather than the accusative.
