[1] This funerary kioniskos (small column) commemorates Malthake, an Athenian citizen who is identified as a priestess by the relief depiction of an angular temple key, a common symbol for priestesses on Classical and Hellenistic Atic funerary monuments. Priesthoods are one of very few professions we find explicitly acknowledged on Athenian gravestones in sculpture or inscriptions (see AIUK 4.6 (BM funerary), no. 23 for the priestess Choirine; J. B. Connelly, Portrait of a Priestess, 2007, ch. 8). Relief decoration on these gravestones tends to associate priests with sacrificial knives and priestesses with keys. There is a particular reluctance among citizens to designate themselves by their jobs, but roles such as priestesses and soldiers were perhaps appropriate to display to the passersby since they indicate the performance of citizen duties (on occupational terms in dedications, see IG I³ 546 with notes). Monuments for non-citizens also rarely refer to the deceased’s profession, but we find a number of categories of household servants and slaves, such as wet-nurses (see AIUK 4.6 (BM funerary), no. 37) and paidagogoi (who supervised young boys, e.g. IG II² 6397).
