[1] This grave monument is from a family funerary enclosure (peribolos) on the Street of the Tombs in the Kerameikos that includes the famous funerary relief of the cavalryman Dexileos (IG II² 6217). It commemorates Lysanias, a nephew of Dexileos, his wife Kallistrate, and their son Kalliphanes, who also had a separate funerary monument here (IG II² 11817); further family members were commemorated within the same plot (see IG II² 6227, IG II² 6230; for the stemma see Humphreys, Kinship, 994 tab. 27.6A). The form of grave marker is a marble trapeza (or mensa), a solid rectangular table-like monument that appeared around the middle of the 4^th cent. BC and became one of the three forms of gravestones allowed under the sumptuary reforms of Demetrius of Phaleron ca. 317 BC (according to Cicero, De Legibus 2.66), the others being the small column (kioniskos or columella) and the labellum or cippus (see AIUK 3, p. 31). They usually have a roughly dressed upper surface, likely to receive a wooden tray or simply on which to place offerings during rituals performed at the grave.
