[1] This is one of five inscriptions from the funerary enclosure (peribolos) of the family of Philon of Phaleron, which is located on the south side of the Sacred Way in the Kerameikos, and comprises a façade of marble orthostates behind which are a row five kioniskoi for three of Philon’s children (Demarchos, Demo, and Soso) (IG II² 7598, 7600, and 7271), a grandson also called Philon (the present inscription), and the younger Philon’s wife Mikkion (IG II² 7266), daughter of Soso (the couple were first cousins). If there were monuments to Philon himself and his other known son, Polyxenos, they have not survived. Attempts to identify the elder Philon (most recently Humphreys, Kinship, 1139, tab. 31.1) with the Philon who was a councillor ca. 330 BC (Agora XV 46, l. 42) should be resisted, as Demarchos died young and unmarried around 250 BC.
