[1] Seleukeia in Pieria was the seaport of the Seleukid capital, Antioch on the Orontes. The inscription cannot be dated precisely, but the honouring of a whole city is unusual at this period and should be seen in the context of Athens' close relations with Antiochos IV Epiphanes (175-164), both before and after his accession to the Seleukid throne (cf. IG II³ 1, 1323). Honouring the seaport may also suggest that there was more of a commercial aspect to this relationship than other epigraphical evidence might suggest.
