[1] This stele of Pentelic marble is decorated with a relief, unfortunately damaged. Only the hand of a figure (presumably seated) is recognisable; it may have held a painted attribute characteristic of the deity. The dedication to Herakles is inscribed on a wide band above the relief. The inscription is dated on the basis of the letter forms (cf. E. Tagalidou, Weihreliefs an Herakles aus klassischer Zeit, 1993, 201–202, no. 13). The dedication was made by a father and his two sons (see also C. L. Lawton, Hesperia Supplements 41, 2007, 59, n. 70). It was probably offered to Herakles as a protector and a healer, cf. IG II³ 4, 1155 and 1159 with notes; see also R. Parker, Polytheism and Society at Athens, (2007), 412, n. 100. Demonstrating family relations in dedications was common practice, see Parker 2007, 48.
