[1] This rounded marble stone is very similar to IG II³ 4, 1161. It may have been decorated with a relief (cf. IG II³ 4, 1159; E. Tagalidou, Weihreliefs an Herakles aus klassischer Zeit (1993), 202–203, no. 14) or planned as a dedication without any relief. In the latter case, the stone itself may represent in marble the usual offerings to the gods, e.g., cakes (popana) and/or be related to sacred stones, which could be left in their natural state (argoi lithoi) or carved (omphaloi). On these, cf. Paus. 9.18.2 and M. C. Monaco, Halirrhothios (2015), 141.The dedication may derive from a hypothesised sanctuary of Herakles on the south slope of Acropolis (see IG II³ 4, 1157 with notes), but, since it was not found in situ, its original location cannot be determined. As the dedicator is mentioned only by his personal name, without a patronymic or demotic, he might be a freedman or a slave; see Monaco 2015, 141.
