[1] The sole testimonium for this dedication is a passing mention by the Italian art historian Ennio Quirino Visconti (1751-1818) in his account of the Elgin marbles; he described it a votive inscription dedicated to Hypsistos in the shape of an ear inscribed with the name 'Paederos' (Visconti, A Letter from the Chevalier Antonio Canova, And, Two Memoirs Read to the Royal Institute of France on the Sculptures in the Collection of the Earl of Elgin 1818, 171-172). Ellis, Elgin Marbles (2 vols., 1846), II.107 reports that this and another votive, once part of the Elgin collection, were stolen from their storage in the court-yard of Burlington House (London). Its current location is unknown.

It was apparently one of a number of imperial period dedications to Zeus Hypsistos (“Zeus The All High”) deriving from the Earl of Aberdeen's excavations at the former site of the Athenian Assembly on the Pnyx: see AIUK 4.5 no. 13, with notes. Many of them, like this one, take the form of anatomical votives.
