[1] This inscription (which has at some time been deliberately erased, though remaining legible) marked the entrance to the Pythion at Ikarion, which was located at the deme centre next to the temple of Dionysos and the theatre (plan, Csapo and Wilson, p. 137). Cf. IG I³ 1015; IG I³ 254, l. 30. For votive dedications associated with this sanctuary see IG II³ 4, 632, 638 (by pilgrims to Delphi, Pythaistai), IG II³ 4, 639 (by Hebdomaistai), IG II³ 4, 942 . As the first editor, C. D. Buck, noted (ASCSA 5, 1886-1890 [1892], 63-64), it was very unusual for Greek temples to be labelled in this way. The need for such a label in this case was perhaps created by the effective integration of the Pythion within the space occupied by the Dionysion and the deme theatre.
