[1] The laurel crown was associated with Apollo and was awarded to the victor in the Pythian Games (Paus. 10.7.8). On Attic inscriptions at Delphi, see IG II³ 4, 17 with notes. It is unclear whether the monument commemorates an honour bestowed on the Athenian People at the festival, or an honour bestowed by the Athenian People on an individual victor. The dating of the inscription to the first half of the third century BC is based on the letter forms. ([On the basis of the image in IG pl. IV it seems difficult to rule out a somewhat earlier date and a connection with the circumstances of IG II³ 4, 18, SDL]).
