[1] This is one of two seats in the Theatre of Dionysos assigned to a priest of Asklepios (the other is IG II³ 4, 1897). The original inscription (I) has been fully erased to make way for (II), which was inscribed in the 120s AD or later. Subsequently, (III) was added as an epithet for Asklepios. Paian or Paion appears in the Iliad as the doctor of the gods (5.401, 898), and then became an epithet of Apollo in his role as a healing deity (e.g. AIO 593), occasionally also applied to Asklepios as here (e.g. IG II³ 4, 938, l. 2). The seat was located in the eleventh wedge of seating from the west, with the seat for the Iachkagogos on the sitter’s right (IG II³ 4, 1940) and the firebearer of the Acropolis across the aisle on the left (IG II³ 4, 1941).
