[1] These inscriptions, on epistyle blocks, belong to two monumental arches in the vicinity of the Lesser Propylaia in Eleusis (for the area in the second century AD see D. Willers, in M. Flashar, H.-J. Gehrke and E. Heinrich, Retrospektive. Konzepte von Vergangenheit in der griechisch-römischen Antike, 1996, 179-91). Frs. a-h belong to the eastern arch, while fr. i probably belongs to the western arch. These arches were dedicated by the League of the Panhellenion to the two Goddesses (Demeter and Kore) and an unnamed emperor (on the Panhellenion, see IG II³ 4, 215 with notes). The monuments in their final form date to the Antonine period, but it is likely that they were already begun under Hadrian, who founded the Panhellenion in 132 AD. Both arches are closely modelled on the Arch of Hadrian in Athens (see IG II² 5185 with notes). Several statue bases of Hadrian, Marcus Aurelius and his family found close to the arches can be assigned to the monuments (I Eleusis 453; 505-10). They stood on the upper levels of the arches and were part of the overall dedication. For chronological discussion and further bibliography see Clinton’s commentary on I Eleusis 448.
