[1] For detailed discussion of this inscription see the first edition by C. Habicht, ZPE 158, 2006, 159-63. Eurykleides, grandson of the famous Eurykleides who was liberator of Athens in 229 BC (cf. IG II³ 1, 1160), also dedicated the more precisely dated IG II³ 4, 273. [2] The Anakeia was a festival of the Dioskouroi (Castor and Pollux), which included a horse race (Parker, Polytheism, 457). Eurykleides' victory in it may also be commemorated by an image of the Dioskouroi on coinage issued by his grandson: Habicht, 163 (image). The role of commander of the tribal cavalry contingent (phylarch) is tentatively suggested here on account of their role in other cavalry competitions (cf. IG II³ 4, 252).
