[1] This base is one of a series of military dedications from deme garrisons in honour of their annual commanders. For an overview of the genre see IG II³ 4, 285 n.1. Charias of Kydathenaion was trierarch in 326/5 BC (cf. Athenian Onomasticon, s. v. Charias of Kydathenaion). In the early 290s as hoplite general he seized the Acropolis, but was expelled and executed by Lachares who then set himself up as a tyrant (P. Oxy. 17.2082 = FGrH 257a F1-2 with P. Thonemann, ZPE 144, 2003, 123-24; cf. G. J. Oliver, War, Food, and Politics in Early Hellenistic Athens, 2007, 174 n. 5, 235). On the generalship for the countryside see I Rham. 3, with notes.
