[1] On the ephebic dedications of the Hellenistic period see IG II³ 4, 357 with n. 1. On dedications by lampadarchs cf. IG II³ 4, 371. This base has a cutting in the top for insertion of a dedicatory torch, and would have been fixed to a wall; cf. IG II³ 4, 375 and texts referenced there. This particular base probably comes from the Ptolemaion or Diogeneion gymnasia, which were perhaps in the area of the findspot. It was likely dedicated to Hermes, as were IG II³ 4, 386, 391, and 407 (but cf. IG II³ 4, 387 which was dedicated to the Nymphs). Themistokles of Hagnous was to become prominent, cf. Athenian Onomasticon; I Eleusis 300.
