[1] The original letters inscribed here were erased and replaced with the name of this archon, whose date of office is unknown. If G. Schmalz, Augustan and Julio-Claudian Athens, 58-59, 309 (cf. C. P. Jones, Phoenix 1978, 228) is correct to identify him with Theogenes (I) of Paiania, he should have served as archon before 5/4 BC. [2] Probably the Megiste who is named as priestess of Athena Polias on IG II³ 4, 10. [3] The board of the pyloroi, “gate-keepers” of the Acropolis, is only known from a series of documents which date from the late 1st cent. BC to the first three centuries AD. We do not know their specific functions. Cf. IG II³ 4, 40, and see SEG 59.177, 15/14 BC, for a catalogue of pyloroi. [4] This trumpeter signalled, at sunrise and sunset, the official opening and closing of the gates to the Acropolis, cf. D. J. Geagan, Hesperia Suppl. 12 (1967), 126-27.
