[1] This rectangular marble base is a fourth-century choregic dedication commemorating a victory in the dithyrambic competition at the City Dionysia (cf. IG II³ 4, 460 with notes). There is anathyrosis for attaching another block to the right. The appearance of Oineis as the single victorious tribe makes the ascription of this dedication to the City Dionysia rather than Thargelia certain. Though the sponsor’s name cannot certainly be reconstructed, his father Melesias of Oe (Davies, APF, 9816) served as treasurer of Athena in 415/4 (cf. IG I³ 308, l. 66). [2] Diophon is also attested as the winning director at the Thargelia in 380/9 (IG II³ 4, 476). [3] This is the earliest fourth-century choregic dedication for the City Dionysia in which the archon’s name is preserved.
