[1] On the choregic dedications from Ikarion see IG II³ 4, 497. This dedication is inscribed on the epistyle of a semi-circular exedra, with interior stone bench, later built into a Byzantine church at the site of the deme Ikarion. Now reconstructed in situ, it is "the most elaborate choregic monument to survive from the demes" (Csapo-Wilson, 174, with drawings and photos). The closest parallel is the much larger semicircular exedra of the late-4th cent. BC from the Dionysion of Thasos (Csapo-Wilson II, IV, no. Dxvi 3). The beginning of the first name has been damaged: it appears to be "Denias" (Δ̣Ε̣ΝΙΑΣ, IG, following D. R. Jordan and J. Curbera, ZPE 166, 2008, 138 [SEG 58.188], alternative spelling of "Deinias") or "Hagnias" (Α̣Γ̣ΝΙΑΣ, preferred by Csapo-Wilson, following K. Takeuchi, Horos 22-25, 2010-2013 [2014], 96-7, no. 7 [SEG 63.165] and Buck's 19th-century reading, and close to the reading of the earliest witness, Richard Chandler in 1766, ΑΙΝΙΑΣ). The latter yields identity with Hagnias of Ikarion who was a syntrierarch in 362/1 and 356 and sole trierarch before 323/2 (IG II² 1612, l. 141; 1631, l. 637 f., cf. Davies, APF 131) and would make this "the single known case of a man who served as liturgist in both the city and his home deme" (Csapo-Wilson, 173). Their related names suggest that Xanthippos and Xanthides were brothers, and De(i)nias/Hagnias was perhaps their father. Omission of explicit reference to choregia in the inscription is notable, but is paralleled in another choregic inscription from this deme, IG II³ 4, 497.
