[1] This large triangular marble base is a Roman-period choregic dedication (cf. IG II³ 4, 558 with notes). The letter forms are modelled on those of the fifth-century BC. This type of archaising script is most common at Athens around the reign of Hadrian, but occurs sporadically from the late first century BC to the end of the second century AD (cf. S. Aleshire, XI Congresso internazionale di Epigrafia, 1999, pp. 158 and 161). The inscription originally listed multiple co-sponsors (choregoi). This is the only known example from Roman Athens of the role being shared, but shared sponsorships were common in the Classical period, especially in the Rural Dionysia (e.g., IG II³ 4, 500). The surviving name might be restored as “Flavius Hermes” or “his son (huios), Hermes”. The lost space is sufficient for another name to the left, but not for a second demotic, so the two sponsors are probably brothers or father and son. The relief above the inscription preserves the lower half of two leaping people, presumably chorus members dancing.
