[1] This is not a dedication, but a funerary monument commemorating victories in Panhellenic festivals. The inscription is on a base that supported a marble lekythos. For the marble lekythos in funerary contexts cf. IG II² 6060. The term "new" is otherwise unattested at this period in relation to the Isthmian Games. It may refer to a (recent?) reinstitution of the Games (for a later revision cf. IG II³ 4, 594 l. 15), but it has also been suggested that, in an inscription that contains several cutting errors, “New” (nea) is a mistake for “Nemea”. To judge by the letter forms, the inscription may be earlier than the date given in IG II³ 4 (Petritaki, ca. 375-350 BC). [2] The victor is not named on this monument, but would seem to belong to the family of the well-known Lysis son of Demokrates of Aixone, commemorated on a marble funerary loutrophoros that was unearthed in the same area, Stroud, Hesp. 53, 1984, 355-60. Plat. Lys. 205 C mentions family victories in the Pythian, Isthmian and Nemean Games. IG II² 7045 commemorates the daughter of Lysis, significantly named “Isthmonike”, “Isthmian Victory”.
