To you, Patroos,^[2] Onetor dedicated these apples,^[3] as symbols (sēmata) of his holy Pythian victory in eloquence (euepiēs), whom Nemea, Thebes and spacious Lebadeia^[4] and Mede-killing Plataia^[5] adorned with [crowns] (5) and the Argive shield^[6] and the breastplate (thōrēx)^[7] . . . twice, and Rarian^[8] . . . Phoibos, graciously receive [these gifts and] [grant it to him who worships you to offer you more prizes, lord] . . .

[1] With this monument, inscribed appropriately in verse, Onetor (who is not otherwise known) commemorated victories in Panhellenic competitions, in which he displayed his eloquence (l. 1, the precise character of the contests, e.g. for poets, orators or heralds, is unclear). [2] “Ancestral” (Patroos) was an epithet of Apollo at Athens. [3] Apples (moulded perhaps in metal?) were awarded as prizes to successful contestants at the Pythian Games in Delphi (cf. S. Perrot BCH 133, 2009, 165). [4] The references are to victories in the Nemean Games, the [Herakleia] in Thebes and the [Trophonia or Basileia] at Lebadeia; cf. IG II³ 4, 599, with notes. [5] For the Eleutheria in Plataia cf. IG II³ 4, 599, with notes. [6] For this festival at Argos and its names see IG II³ 4, 594, with notes. [7] This is sometimes taken as a reference to the Spartan Hyakinthia (cf. Aristophanes F532 Radt).
