[1] Similarities in style, layout, and wording indicate that this inscription belongs to a set of official dedications to Apollo at Delphi made by Athenian cleruchs on Samos (see IG XII 6, 1 264 with notes; on Attic inscriptions at Delphi, see IG II³ 4, 17 with notes). The only Athenian archons named Aris- (l.4) in the time of the Athenian cleruchy on Samos (365–322 BC) are Aristodemos (352/1 BC), Aristophanes (331/0 BC), or Aristophon (330/29 BC). The three dedications of the Samian cleruchs are all very similar in style, layout, and wording, suggesting that they are close to one another in date and making 352/1 BC less likely. Of the other two dates, 330/29 seems most likely, since it was a Pythian year (see IG XII 6, 1 264 with notes). The archon on Samos, Timostratos, cannot be further identified.

According to the first editor, J. Bousquet, BCH 83, 1959, 152 = SEG 18.201, this is a stele of ‘Pentelic’ marble from Attica. For the significance of this, see IG XII 6, 1 264 with notes.
