[1] This is one of at least seven benches dedicated by generals of the coastal countryside at Rhamnous. This bench was found in the synedrion, where deliberative meetings were held, and which may have been the original location of all the benches. Thoukritos’ name is restored on the basis of IG II³ 4, 293; he was responsible for construction of the military-administrative complex near the east gate, which included the synedrion (hounoured by decrees of the soldiers, I Rhamn. 10, I Rhamn. 11). [2] The final word (perhaps a name?) is a graffito scratched into the stone along with an image of a dove and three dotted lines at a later date, perhaps by a Christian (cf. IG II³ 4, 300).
