Decree of a thiasos of Bendis on Salamis (249/8 BC)

IG II² 1317b Date: 249/8 BC

Gods. In the archonship of Hieron (249/8)^[1] and the priesthood of Charinos, on the second of the month Skirophorion, at the regular assembly. The society decided. Rhythmos^[2] proposed: since the managers (epimelētai) who were appointed managed (5) the sacrifices and everything else concerning the sanctuary of Bendis, the society of the thiasotai shall decide to praise them and crown each of them; and the treasurer shall assign 15 drachmas. On receiving this let the managers make a dedication in (eis) the sanctuary of Bendis.

[1] This is one of several decrees issued by two groups of worshippers of Bendis on Salamis (see SEG 59.151 with notes). This decree comes from the acropolis group. For the dates, see M.J. Osborne, ZPE 171 (2009), 83–99. [2] Rhythmos, here the proposer, is also honoured as manager in SEG 59.152. [3] This is the only one of the three decrees of the “acropolis group” which preserves the priest’s name. Charinos apparently doubled as treasurer of the group. [4] Nikias, here a manager, also proposed SEG 59.152, and was honoured as treasurer in SEG 59.151. [5] Stratokles, apparently a citizen from Eleusis, had also been honoured as secretary in SEG 59.151 and SEG 59.152; the office was apparently not annual, or could be repeated.
