[1] The theatre of Dionysos at Athens was equipped with extensive allocated seating for priests and other dignitaries (proedria). Many of the marble "thrones" survive (in some cases two or more adjoining seats were made from the same block of marble) and were inscribed on the front beneath the seat with the title of the dignitary to whom the seat was allocated. A few of the inscriptions date to v or iv BC, but the majority date to the late Hellenistic and Imperial periods (ii BC-ii or iii AD). In many cases the current inscription replaced an older one, now erased. This seat is for the priest of Apollo Zoster. Lines 1 and 2 were erased, and l. 1 reinscribed.
