[1] For an introduction to this set of inscribed records see Meyer, Metics, no. 1 with notes. The present fragment has been commonly associated with Meyer, Metics, no. 27, but Meyer suspects that these two fragments do not in fact come from the same stone (2010, pp. 129, 132). The formula found in both fragments, probably also in IG II² 1578, and perhaps in Meyer, Metics, no. 28, is noteworthy for lacking any mention of phialai. A plausible explanation for the absence of phialai is that these fragments date to the time of manumission in court — already in practice in Athens around the mid-fourth century (Isaios fr. 18 Loeb = Dion. Hal., Isaios 5) — but predate the imposition of mandatory dedications upon manumission, probably an innovation of Lykourgos (Lewis, Attic Manumissions, p. 235-37; McArthur, Kittos, 280-84). We have thus dated the fragments that lack phialai to before ca. 336/5 BC, the likely first year of Lykourgos' period in charge of the Athenian financial administration (cf. IG II³ 1, 445 with notes). However, as a terminus ante quem for the introduction of phialai dedications, this date is tentative; the phialai dedications probably began early in the tenure of Lykourgos, but not necessarily in his first year of office (n.b. Meyer, Metics, no. 11, note 3, a text with phialai that may date to ca. 334/3 BC).
