Dedication to Eileithyia by a woman

IG II³ 4 1152 Date: 3rd cent. AD

Blauthia daughter of Alexandros (dedicated this) on behalf of herself to Eileithyia, who saves, and saves again, as a vow.^[1]

[1] On Athenian dedications to the goddess of childbirth Eileithyia, see IG II³ 4, 1151, with notes. Although purchased in Athens (in 1897), this dedication was said to have been previously kept by the Capucins ("apud Capuccinos") on the island of Paros, and features of the language and formulae perhaps confirm that it is not of Athenian provenance. Cult of Eileithyia is well-attested on Paros (in addition to this inscription, which is IG XII 5, 1022, see IG XII 5, 183-209, 1023). The name "Blauthia" is also odd; = "Plautia"? (Curbera). The reference to the repeated salutary power of Eileithyia is perhaps suggestive that the dedicant had already had one child safely, and was seeking the goddess' protection for another delivery.
