[1] This herm for Ulpius Pompeianus is one of a number of herms commemorating authors and philosophers which have been found in the area of the sanctuary of Asklepios on the south slope of the Acropolis (on which, see IG II³ 4, 665). Pompeianus also appears as a Councillor in Agora XV 406, l. 28, but his literary activities are otherwise unknown (D. Papanikolaou in Brill’s New Jacoby² 100A). Other historians active at Athens in the second century AD include Arrian and Moschos of Halai (IG II² 5506). Pompeianus is perhaps related to the Ulpius Aelius Pompeianus, who was high priest of the Imperial cult of Galatia and established a theatrical competition at Ankyra in the reign of Hadrian (S. Mitchell and D. French, The Greek and Latin Inscriptions of Ankara, no. 140-143). Flavius Sosigenes, probably the prominent Athenian who served as archon in 184/5 AD, is not otherwise attested as a sophist (cf. Byrne, Roman Citizens of Athens, 2003, 241). The head has been lost. [2] A graffito composed of a pair of palm fronds and the letters EYKΛ have been carved on the herm below the phallus at a later date. They probably commemorate an athletic victory by someone named Eukles.
