[1] The inscription is engraved on the epistyle of a small rectangular marble votive relief, which depicts a group of worshippers with a young woman carrying a basket (kiste) and a servant leading a bull to be sacrificed before a youthful Herakles portrayed on the right. The hero holds his lion’s skin in his left elbow and an apple held in his left hand. There is a tenon at the bottom for attaching the relief to a base. Based on iconographic comparanda, E. Tagalidou, Weihreliefs an Herakles aus klassischer Zeit, 1993, 221-3, nr. 23, dates the relief to the second half of the 4th century BC.

The findspot suggests that the sanctuary of Herakles where it was dedicated was probably the one at Kynosarges, south of the Acropolis, just outside the city-walls, mentioned by Paus. 1.10.3 (see also M.F. Billot, BCH 116, 1992, 137-8, and F.T. van Straten, Hiera kala, 1995, 88, 297 R90).
The dedicant Panis was probably a foreign resident from Aigeira in Achaia (cf. Athenian Onomasticon ) or from Aigeiros in Megaris or in Lesbos. D. Robinson, Hesperia 17 (1948), 137-40 thought that Aigirios was the name of a second dedicator, but the hypothesis is not particularly convincing. M. Mistos, Polemon 4 (1949), 32-3 nr. 27 suggest alternatively that Aigeiros is a patronymic.
