Decree of Teithras honouring Euthippos (the demarch)

Text below follows SEG 24.152 Blepyros proposed: since Euthippos managed the statue well and justly and made it bigger than agreed and spent additional money on it, the Teithrasians shall resolve, to praise Euthippos and crown (5)him with a foliage crown and remit to him a mina of money from the deposited money; and to inscribe this decree on a stone stele and stand it in the Koreion.^[1]

[1] Euthippos is the demarch of Teithras whose name heads this inscription (see SEG 24.151) and who was perhaps responsible for the initiative relating to perpetual leases reflected in the preceding texts on the stone, SEG 24.151 and SEG 24.152. It is not clear what, if any, the significance is of his not being described as demarch in this decree. On the deme of Teithras, see Agora XV 45 with notes. On demes in general see RO 46, with notes. The precise context of this decree is not made explicit, and confident interpretation beyond our reach, but as Humphreys suggests, it would seem possible the decision to erect a statue was taken "because it proved difficult to reach agreement on the deme's claims to ownership and rents. This was perhaps Euthippos' way of extricating himself from a difficult situation; it allowed him to extract money from demesmen who were thought to owe back payments of rent without a full legal investigation." The "deposited money" (6) is the money Euthippos had been able to collect, to which he had added a personal contribution, enabling the statue (which was presumably of Korē) to be made bigger than had originally been envisaged. Euthippos was honoured with a foliage crown, which cost nothing, but there was enough left over to remit to him a mina = 100 drachmas of the money contributed for the statue, which, Humphreys supposes, Euthippos would have used for a sacrifice, in which we might envisage that the deme as a whole and/or the interested parties (i.e. the tenants of perpetual leases) would have participated. For another statue (of Aphrodite) erected by a group of demesmen cf. IG II³ 4, 223 (Halai Aixonides, context unclear).

The proposer of this decree, Blepyros, is important for the dating of this inscription, since, as Humphreys notes, it is attractive to identify him with the Blepyros son of Phyleides who was manager of the dockyards in 349/8 BC (IG II² 1620, 45) and councillor in 331/0 or 330/29 (Agora XV 45, 13-14), and may also have been the father of Phyleides son of Blepyros who bought property from the deme in the public land sale programme of the Lykourgan period, Rationes Centesimarum, F3A, 1-10. If so, this is suggestive of a date for this inscription a little after 350 BC (cf. the notes to SEG 24.151).
