A[rchedikos] [son of Naukri]tos of Lamptrai proposed: so that as many as possible of the friends of the king (basileōs) and of Antipater,^[1] (5) having been honoured by the Athenian People, may benefit the city of the Athenians;^[2] for good fortune, the People shall decide . . . . . .

Transliterations on Places on

[1] The "king" here might be Philip III Arrhidaios, and the decree date to late 322, shortly after Athens' defeat in the Lamian War, or it might be Alexander the Great, in which case the decree will perhaps date shortly before his death in June 323, while Antipater was in control of mainland Greece. [2] A vivid and explicit example of the "hortatory intention" clauses which became common in Athenian decrees in the 340s, as Athens' "real" power began to ebb away and she endeavoured purposively to deploy the honorary decree as a foreign policy lever.
