Tribal honours for taxiarch of Kekropis, 339/8 BC

No. 1 Decree 1 (Soldiers of Kekropis) . . . proposed: the soldiers shall decide, [since the taxiarch of the Kekropid] tribe^VII Boularchos son of Aristoboulos [of Phlya was a good man] concerning the soldiers, to praise [Boularchos and crown him with a] gold crown of five hundred (5)[drachmas for his manly virtue (andragathias) and] love of honour (philotimias) towards the soldiers . . . to obtain from the tribesmen . . .

Decree 2 (Kekropis) . . . of - proposed: since [Boularchos] . . . . . . concerning the tribe . . . . . . the tribesmen shall decide to praise (10) [Boularchos son of Aristoboulos of Phl]ya and crown him with a [gold] crown [of - drachmas] for his manly virtue (andragathias) and love of honour (philotimias), . . . and the secretary [of the tribe shall - ?] this decree . . . . . . inscribe it on the dedication as well as [the decree of the soldiers?].

Transliterations on Places on

[1] The base (no. 2) was perhaps set up alongside the stele (no. 1). The new fragment published by Malouchou (= SEG 68.63) shows that the first decree on the stele was not, as previous editors had inferred from the surviving crowns, a decree of the Council, but of the soldiers of Kekropis. It seems that only two of the decrees commemorated in the inscribed crowns were inscribed on the stele. It is possible that the campaigns that gave rise to these honours, which are dated by no. 2 to 339/8 BC, were "the battle by the river and the winter battle" in which the Athenians were successful, in the lead-up to their eventual defeat by Philip II the following year at the battle of Chaironeia (Dem. 18.216-217).
