[1] The text is inscribed on the abacus of a marble pillar, with a depression on top for some kind of votive. It may be connected with the cavalry processions which occurred near the Academy (Xen. Hipparch. 3.1). The original excavators of the “Peripatos” identified it as part of Plato's Academy, but the presence of this inscription reused in its foundations shows it must be significantly later – probably late Hellenistic (L. Threatte, Inscribed Schist Fragments from the Academy Excavations, 2007, 30; cf. A. Caruso in U. Mania and M. Trümper, Development of Gymnasia and Graeco-Roman Cityscapes, 2018, 205-206 = SEG 68.82).
