[1] This statue base once stood on top of the Gate of Athena Archegetis, the western entrance to the Roman Agora, on which see IG II³ 4, 12 with notes. Lucius Caesar (17 BC - 2 AD) and his elder brother Gaius were Augustus’ eldest grandsons by his daughter Julia. Augustus adopted them and made them his heirs, introducing Lucius to public life in 2 BC. This statue presumably belongs between that date and his sudden death in 2 AD. The structural remains suggest that the base supported an equestrian statue and was part of the initial design of the gate ca. 27-10 BC (M. C. Hoff, Archäologischer Anzieger 4, 2002, 583–99). Schmalz surveys various possible explanations for the disparity between the date of the base and the date of the gate. The inscription was reported by various eighteenth- and nineteenth-century observers, but is no longer extant.
