Choregic dedication of Philomelos for the Thargelia

Front^[1] Philomelos son of Philippides of Paiania, serving as sponsor (chorēgōn),^[2] was victorious for Pandionis (and) Akamantis^[3] in the boys' competition, (5)⟦Eukles⟧ was director (edidaske),^[4] Alexippos was pipe-player.^[5]

[1] This marble rounded base is a choregic dedication commemorating a victory in dithyrambic competitions at the Thargelia (cf. IG II³ 4, 475 with notes). The stone was found together with IG II³ 4, 480, 481. This is remarkable since these three inscriptions are the only ones in the set of Thargelian dedication carrying the same text on both sides. [2] Philomelos son of Philippides of Paiania (Davies, AFP 14670) is recorded as trierarch (cf. IG II² 1604, l.90; IG II² 1623, l. 262) and syntrierarch on several occasions (cf. IG II² 1624, l. 42; IG II² 1633, l. 701). His name was appended to a decree of the tribal assembly of Pandionis for another victory at the Thargelia, in the men’s competition (IG II² 1138, ll. 29-32). [3] For the choral team of Akamantis/Pandionis, cf. IG II³ 4, 480. [4] The director’s name is inscribed in a rasura, and the nonsense inscription ΔΙΔΙΔ was erroneously added and ineffectively erased, probably by a distracted or inexperienced letter-cutter (cf. Amandry in BCH 101, 1997, 178, n. 23). On Eukles, cf. IG II³ 4, 480. [5] On Alexippos, cf. IG II³ 4, 482. [6] On the front side, the director (Eukles) was placed before the pipe-player (Alexippos). It is likely that for the rear side, the director’s name was forgotten altogether and that it was later rectified by a different letter-cutter (evident by the difference in the carved letters).
