Decree for alliance with Dionysios I of Syracuse, 368/7 BC (?)

In the archonship of [Nausigenes (368/7)?][1] . . . . . . prytany . . . . . . was secretary . . . . . . prytany. [Of the presiding committee] (5) -s son of Daippos (?) [of - was putting to the vote] . . . - proposed: [for the good fortune of the Athenians?], the People shall decide: to praise Dionysios the [ruler (archonta)] of Sicily, because he is a good man with regard to the People of Athens (10) and the allies. He and his descendants shall be allies of the People of Athens for all time on the following terms. If anybody goes against the territory of the Athenians for war, either by land or by sea, Dionysios (15) and his descendants shall lend support as the Athenians call on them, both by land and by sea, with all their strength, as far as possible. And if anybody goes against Dionysios or his descendants or those whom Dionysios rules for (20) war, either by land or by sea, the Athenians shall lend support [as they call on them], both by land and by sea, with all their strength, as far as possible. Dionysios or his descendants shall not be permitted to bear arms [for harm] (25) against the territory (chōran) of the Athenians, either by land or by sea; nor shall the Athenians be permitted to bear arms [for harm] against Dionysios or his descendants or those whom Dionysios rules, either (30) by land or by sea. The ambassadors (presbeis) who have come from Dionysios shall receive the oath about the alliance; and there shall swear the Council and the generals and the hipparchs and the taxiarchs. Dionysios (35) shall swear, and the . . . . . . of the Syracusans . . . -rarchs. Each party shall swear [the customary oath ?]. The Athenian ambassadors (presbeis) sailing to Sicily shall receive the (40) oaths. This decree the secretary of the Council shall inscribe on a stone stele and stand on the acropolis. For the inscribing the treasurer of the People shall give [30? drachmas].
