IG II3 1 1137 Date: 228/7, 211/0 and 193/2 BC
Gods
Decree 1[1] In the archonship of Heliodoros (228/7), in the eleventh prytany,
of KekropisIX. Thargelion. Lysistratos son of Phylarchides
of Oinoe proposed: since Eumaridas both previously,
(5) at the time when it happened[2] that Boukris, having raided (katadramonta) the country,
brought to shore (katagagein) in Crete many of the citizens and
others from the city, did the People
many great services and advanced (proeisēnegke) money
from his own resources towards the twenty talents which had been negotiated (sunphōnēthenta) for
(10) the prisoners (aichmalōtōn), and loaned the captives travelling expenses,
and now when the People has despatched ambassadors, so that
privileges should remain in place for all Cretans, and in order that,
if anywhere booty-rights (laphuron) have been granted to those who descend (scil. on Attica) by sea, this
shall be abrogated (arthei), (Eumaridas) counselled that everything should be done in the interests
(15) of the People, and joined in the embassy to Knossos and the allies,
and gave letters to the ambassadors to
Polyrena, to friends there, that they might collaborate with them
concerning our common interests, and took it upon himself to
make every effort that the privileges granted by the People
(20) should remain for all those living in Crete; in order therefore that the
People may be seen to be honouring those who demonstrate their preference
at every opportunity, for good fortune, the People shall decide,
to praise Eumaridas son of Pankles of Kydonia and crown
him with a gold crown according to the law, for his good will
(25) and love of honour towards the Athenian Council and People,
and to stand a bronze statue of him on the acropolis;
and on his rendering service in the future, it shall be possible for him
to be honoured worthily of his benefaction; and the secretary of the People
shall inscribe this decree on a stone stele,
(30) and stand it next to the statue; and the treasurer
of the miltary fund and the board of administrators (tous epi tei dioikēsei) shall allocate
the expenditure accrued for the erection (anathesin) of the statue and the stele.
Decree 2[1] In the (archonship) of Archelaos (211/0). Intercalary Anthesterion. Dionysios son of Theophilos
of Elaious proposed: since on account of the good will which
(35) Eumaridas of Kydonia continues to have towards the People, the People
previously voted to erect (anatheinai) a statue of him, and now Eurykleides
and Mikion, drawing attention to the services he has rendered,
think it right (axiousi) that he be granted the erection (anathesin) in the precinct of the
People and the Graces,[3] for good fortune, the People shall decide,
(40) that Eumaridas be granted the erection of the statue, which the People
voted for him previously, in the precinct of the People and the Graces,
as Eurykleides and Mikion request for him; and the
rest of the honours voted for him shall be valid.
Decree 3[1] In the archonship of Phanarchides (193/2), in the third prytany,
(50) of PandionisIII. Boedromion. Nikias son of Polyxenos of Poros proposed:
since Charmion, being the son of Eumaridas of Kydonia, who was proxenos
and benefactor, showing himself worthy
of the honours granted to his father, having sailed into
the Piraeus, was sent to Delphi as official visitor (theōros) by the citizens,
(55) the generals having put him forward, and has given an account
to the Council of his ancestral good will and of what he had accomplished (pepragmena),
and announces that he will be useful in the future
to those Athenians present in Crete, both individually and collectively;
in order therefore that privileges may be awarded at every opportunity to those who are worthy
(60) now, just as previously, for good fortune, the Council
shall decide, that the presiding committee allotted for the forthcoming
Assembly shall put these matters on the agenda, and submit the opinion
of the Council to the People, that it seems good to the Council, that the generals
should despatch gifts of hospitality (aposteilai xenia) to Charmion son of Eumaridas, and to
(65) those who are members of the official delegation (suntheōrois) with him, and to his son, Eumaridas;
and the treasurer of the military fund shall allocate the expenditure accrued
in accordance with the usual arrangements (diataxin); and he shall have his ancestral
proxeny, and his descendants; and it shall be possible for him, on his demonstrating in the future his
own (idias) preference, to obtain benefits
(70) from the Council and the People, whatever he may appear to be worthy of.
