SQA Higher in Classical Studies
SQA C815 76, first assessment in 2019
The SQA specifications for the Higher in Classical Studies, under the heading “Skills, Knowledge and Understanding”, require students to build skills in:
● “analysing and evaluating the religious, political, social, moral and cultural values and practices of classical Greek and Roman societies”;
● “interpreting and understanding a range of complex sources”;
● “evaluating the reliability and value of a range of complex sources”;
● “researching and using information collected from a range of sources”.
We hope that these resources on Athenian inscriptions help students to develop such skills in an informed way.
The notes and slides are particularly relevant to the Life in Classical Greece parts of the Question Paper on Classical Society, especially the following topics: Athenian Citizenship and Metics in Athens; Women in Classical Athens; Delian League/Athenian Empire; Religion and Belief.
Students should be encouraged to acknowledge the time period from which evidence derives and what it can tell us in relation to the questions posed.
