[1] This dedication was convincingly ascribed by P. Foucart, Les Athéniens dans la Chersonèse de Thrace au IVe siècle (1911), 20-23, to Chares’ expedition of 357/6 to the Hellespont (l. 3), as IG II² 1611, ll. 288, 291, 292, 325, demonstrates that ships of Periandros (l. 5), Habronides (l. 6, for demotic see IG II³ 4, Add.), Polyeuktos (l. 7) and Aristokles (l. 8) participated in that expedition. This is one of the three earliest dedications to carry the rubric, “having been crowned by the Council and People”. The other two also date to 357/6: IG II³ 4, 2 and IG II³ 4, 57. This probably reflects a reform of the arrangements for dedications by officials introduced in 357/6 (thus AIO Papers 9), and goes against the suggestion of E. Ruschenbusch, ZPE 67 (1987), 162-63, based on the listing of Aristokles and Periandros at IG II² 1611, ll. 291-293, as syntrierarchs rather than independent trierarchs, that this inscription should be ascribed rather to Kephisodotos' expedition to the Hellespont of 360/59 BC (schol. Aischin. 3.51). [2] Responsible for a well-known law of 358/7 BC on the trierarchic symmories ([Dem.] 47.21).
