[1] Each archon had two deputies (paredroi) according to Ath. Pol. 56.1 (cf. Rhodes, Commentary ad loc., IG II³ 1, 881, ll. 31-37), though only one appears here (note that he is the archon's brother). Other inscriptions attest two deputies for the archon known as the basileus, IG II³ 4, 95, IG II³ 4, 111, IG II³ 4, 113. Cf. K. A. Kapparis, Historia 47, 1998, 387-93. The context of this dedication is not clear from the text, though it is perhaps likely that, like the later dedications by the basileus, it commemorates successful completion of the archon's term of office. Only after 357/6 BC did dedications by officials explicitly mention that the dedication followed the crowning of the officials by the Council and People. Cf. AIO Papers 9, sect. 2. Usually the eponymous archon is known to us by name only, and is not identifiable. In this case, however, we know that, in 392/1, Euboulides of Eleusis was one of the Athenians who, with Andokides, sought to make peace with Sparta, FGrH 328 Philochoros F149.
