[1] This fragment from a funerary stele is one of ten inscriptions acquired by George Wheler on his visit to Athens in 1676 and donated to the University of Oxford 1683 (cf. AIUK 11 (Ashmolean), no. 4).

The stele was of the naiskos type, in which architectural surrounds enclose figures in deep relief. Only the upper right corner of the stele survives, including parts of the relief and the pediment, with the inscription on the architrave. In the surviving portion of the relief, Glauketes is depicted as a bearded man, preserved down to the waist, head supported by his right hand, while his left hand rests on something no longer visible, perhaps the walking stick (bakteria) carried by citizen men. Comparison with other funerary reliefs suggests that the lost portion of the relief depicted Glauketes’ wife, standing in front of him and gripping the right hand of a third figure (their son?) with her right hand (a gesture called dexiosis). Nothing else is known of Glauketes, whose name was a common one in Attica. His family relationships and citizen status would probably have been clarified by other inscribed objects in the funerary plot (peribolos) in which this stele stood. The absence of a demotic does not indicate that he was not a citizen (cf. AIUK 9 (Brocklesby Park), no. 2). The style of the lettering and relief suggest a date in the early fourth century BC.
