Decree of Aixone honouring the choregoi, Leontios and Glaukon, 317/6 BC

Gods. Philoktemon son of Chremes proposed:^[1] the demesmen shall decide, since the choral sponsors in the 5 archonship of Demogenes (317/6), Leontios son of Dion, Glaukon son of Kallikrates, sponsored choruses for the Aixoneans well and with love of honour, to praise them and crown them 10 with a gold crown of 500 drachmas each for their love of honour . . .

[1] On the deme Aixone and its inscriptions see Ackermann no. 1, with notes. This discovery of this decree was recorded in the 19th century in an excavation at "Trachones". Modern Trachones is to the north of Aixone (location of the deme Euonymon), but in the 19th century "Trachones" apparently extended further south and the excavation was most likely at Pirnari, on the eastern side of Glyphada (Ackermann, 112-13).

This decree, like Ackermann no. 2 (proposed by the same man) and no. 4, honoured two choregoi who had "sponsored choruses" at the local Dionysia. On the question of exactly what choruses were sponsored cf. the note to Ackermann no. 2. The choregoi are not otherwise known. This decree is notable as the latest firmly dated evidence for the operation of the classical Athenian choregia (Csapo-Wilson).
