[1] On the introduction of the “competition-director” (agonothetes) in or shortly before 307/6 BC see IG II³ 4, 518, with notes. To commemorate his competition-directorship Thrasykles reworked the large monument which originally commemorated his father’s choregia, IG II³ 4, 468, with notes (see the drawing IG II³ 4, p. 180). Thrasykles himself appears to have been commander of his tribal contingent of cavalry (phylarch) in 282/1 BC (SEG 21.525, l. 32), cf. Davies, APF p. 241. Pronomos (A5) is also attested as director in 255/4 or 252/1 BC (CID IV p. 24 no. 48; Stefanis, Dion. technitai 2148). Lysippos (B5) is also attested as director in 253/2 or 248/7 BC (CID IV p. 24 no. 55; Stefanis, Dion. technitai 1587). The pipe-player Theon of Thebes is attested only here (Stefanis 1209); similarly Nikokles of Ambracia (Stefanis 1838). This reworking of a choregic monument into an agonothetic one emphasises the monumental continuity of the agonothetic series from the earlier choregic monuments, a feature also implicit in the focus of both series on the dithyrambic competition at the City Dionysia.
