[1] On the choregic dedications from the Attic Rural Dionysia see IG II³ 4, 498. This is a dedication by a choregos commemorating a victory in comedy in the Eleusinian Dionysia. It can be dated only approximately by letter forms. For an earlier monument from Eleusis commemorating a victory in comedy, perhaps also at the Eleusinian Dionysia, see I Eleusis 53 (q.v. for more on the Dionysia at Eleusis). On that occasion there were two sponsors; on this one a single sponsor. Cuttings in the top of the base were probably for a tripod, which was perhaps awarded as a prize to victorious choregoi in the Eleusinian Dionysia. Cf. IG II³ 4, 508 (from Ikarion) and IG II³ 4, 509 (a third choregic dedication from Eleusis).
