[1] This is the marker (horos) of a house used as security for a loan (prasis epi lysei) by the deme Phegaia to an unknown individual (usually this would be a demesman of Phegaia, who might plausibly have owned a house in the city). On the nature of the transaction and other horoi marking land used as security for loans by demes and other collectives of citizens see Agora XIX H84.

Phegaia was a smallish deme of the coastal trittys of Aigeis (bouleutic quota 3, IG II³ 4, 76, 59-62, Agora XV 42, 75-78, or quota 4, IG II³ 4, 75, 14-18) in the eastern coastal area of Attica north of Halai Araphenides "towards Marathon" (Steph. Byz.). Traill, Demos and Trittys, 128, places it at Ierotsakouli; Humphreys, Kinship, 885, is more cautious and locates it at "three or four hamlet sites along the eastern side of the [coastal] plain". Phegaia is also listed as the name of a deme of Pandionis in IG II² 2362, cf. Steph. Byz. s.v. Phegaia. Traill, 57-9, suggests that it was a place in that tribe that was not a deme, homonymous with the deme of Aigeis. IG II² 1932, 12-15, apparently records a shift of tax obligations at Phegaia ca. 400-350 BC (from tenants?) to (cult officials of?) Meneleos (i.e. the Spartan king Menelaos) Archegetes ("Founder/Leader"), Herakles Archegetes and the Dioskouroi (cf. V. Gabrielsen, Classica et Mediaevalia 38, 1987, 39-51). A group which was probably the deme Pheg[aia] was represented by four (?) officials in the sale of at least one property in the public land sale programme of the Lykourgan period, Rationes Centesimarum, F2, 27-33.
