[1] Textual Note. Our translation follows the text of Agora XV, with some adjustments in the light of the first edition of S. A. Koumanoudes, Eph. Arch. 1886, 11-12 no. 5, the only one based on autopsy. We have closed up the empty lines printed by previous eds. after the deme heading in l. 5 and after l. 18, as it seems from Koumanoudes' text that these do not represent vacant or illegible lines, but are merely to ensure the approximate alignment of the two columns of his printed text. 7 [S]ostratos, previous eds., following Koumanoudes, but the alignment of his printed text suggests that there were two letters missing from the start of the name, i.e. [Le]ostratos. If so, he was a relation of, rather than identical with, the Sostratos of Phrearrhioi whose son, Philokrates, was public arbitrator (diaitetes, i.e. in his 60th year) in 329/8 BC, IG II³ 4, 34, 5-6, and adult ephebic official ca. 330, IG II³ 4, 342, 8. 20 Koumanoudes indicates uncertainty about the reading of the first two letters of the patronymic Kletos (a name not otherwise attested in Attica). 21-22 γραμμ[ατεῦς] | [τῆς] βουλῆς [καὶ τοῦ δήμου?] AIO, γραμμ[ατεὺς] | βουλῆς Ag. XV, following IG. One expects a definite article at this period and Koumanoudes actually prints γραμμ[ατεὺς] | . βουλῆς, with the start of l. 22 set ca. 2 spaces to the left with respect to the start of 21. Given that the end of 21 is not preserved, it can not be ruled out that there is also text missing at the end of 22 and that the secretary was "of the Council and the People", as commonly in prytany inscriptions (e.g. IG II³ 4, 48, l. 53, IG II³ 4, 81, ll. 42-3, etc.).

That this is a prytany or Council inscription, rather than some other type of catalogue, is suggested by the reference to the secretary in ll. 21-24 and by the inclusion of 7 + men under the deme heading Phrearrhioi (a deme of tribe IV, Leontis) towards the bottom of col. 1 (the bouleutic quota of Phrearrhioi at this period was 9, see e.g. AIO 2776, with notes). Meritt and Traill dated the inscription to mid-iv BC. The prosopography (see below) accords with this and, as they note, it is also consistent with the transitional orthography (-ος for -ους in 6, but -ου in 8 and 20). On prytany inscriptions see IG I³ 515, with notes. On the newly discovered tribal sanctuary of Leontis in the Agora, in which this inscription was most likely erected, see SEG 66.141. Meritt and Traill contemplate the alternative that this is a list of the whole Council (for such lists see AIO 2776, with notes), raising the possibility that the surviving names in col. 2 belonged to Akamantis (tribe V), but the case for this does not seem very persuasive.

Several of the men from Phearrhioi are identifiable (references to family members not mentioned below can be traced via the Athenian Onomasticon). Lysanias son of Lysikrates (6) was related to, possibly identical with, the Lysanias of Ph. who manumitted a slave, ca. 336/5-322/1 BC, IG II² 1567, 10 and 12. On So- or Leostratos (7-8) see above, Textual Note. Kalliades (10) was perhaps father of the ephebe of 324/3 BC, Eupolis son of K. of Ph., at I Orop. 353 A, 6, 12. Diakritos son of Dieuches was a doctor, crowned with his brother ca. 330 BC, IG II³ 4, 712, l. 9. [2] The secretary, Antimenes of Alopeke (a deme of tribe X, Antiochis), is not otherwise known. The "secretary of" or "to the Council" was more commonly (but not invariably) known as the "prytany secretary" (grammateus kata prytaneian) after a reform of the office in the late 360s which made tenure annual instead of for one prytany, see Agora XV 43, with notes. From 356/5 BC this secretary rotated among the tribes beginning with tribe VII (Kekropis). Antimenes might have been (a) an "old-style" Council secretary, in office before the late 360s, but is more likely, on chronological grounds, (b) a "new-style" secretary in office in one of the years between the late 360s and the beginning of the secretary cycle in 356/5 (there are currently vacancies in 360/59, 359/8 and perhaps 358/7 BC). Alternatively the title of this secretary might be restored as "of the Council [and People]" (see Textual Note), an entirely different official commonly named in prytany and Council lists (cf. Agora XV 43, with notes).
