[1] This is the bottom section of a prytany decree for the tribe of Ptolemais, consisting of one of the crowns honouring officials and the beginning of the list of prytaneis (on post-Sullan prytany decrees, see SEG 28.95 with notes). Prosopography indicates a date in the mid-first century BC. This is the first attestation of the priest of the Phosphoroi (“lightbearers”), though sacrifices by the prytaneis to (Artemis) Phosphoros are attested irregularly in the second century BC (Agora XV 183–184, 197, 199, 240). After the instance here, the priesthood does not appear in inscriptions again until Agora XV 406 (171/2 AD), by which time it seems to have merged with the post of the "official in charge of the sunshade" (ho epi skias), who was responsible for the tholos . In the 1st century BC, the official in charge of the sunshade was a metic or public slave (see SEG 28.95 with notes; D. J. Geagan, Athenian Constitution after Sulla, 1967, 110). The priest is probably singled out for a citation in this inscription because he was himself a member of the tribe holding the prytany. [2] Oinophilos (l. 8) and Eukles (l. 9) are probably brothers. Their father Amphias was mint magistrate in 81/0 BC along with his own father Oinophilos, who was archon basileus immediately after the Sullan sack (IG II² 1714; C. Habicht, Chiron 21, 1991, 13). This inscription should thus date to the 50s or 40s BC. Meliton (l. 10) and Dionysios (l. 11) are father and son.
