[1] This fragmentary inscription, carved into the side of a column drum, is one of around two hundred Roman Imperial-period catalogues of prytaneis and aeisitoi ("those with perpetual dining rights," various magistrates and priests entitled ex officio to dine in the tholos every night). It is unusual in having been erected at Eleusis rather than in the Agora at Athens. This is probably because the Eleusinian Mysteries had taken place during the prytany and, extraordinarily, the Emperor Commodus had served (in absentia) as festival-commander (panegyriarch), who was responsible for feeding the attendees at the Mysteries and perhaps also for other aspects of that festival (J. H. Oliver, AJP 71, 1950, 174-175; D. Geagan, Athenian Constitution after Sulla, 1967, 136). The Great Catalogue of members of the genos of the Kerykes, SEG 24.199, might have been inscribed on the same occasion (D. Geagan, ZPE 33, 1979, 110-11). Commodus appears as an Athenian citizen of the deme of Besa (l. 3), like his adoptive great-grandfather, Hadrian. On Commodus and Athens, see Oliver, Constitutions 209 with notes. For the date, see S. G. Byrne, Roman Citizens of Athens (2003), 324, 509, 517. [2] The eponymos was responsible for funding the tribe’s sacrifices when it was in the prytany (D. Geagan, Athenian Constitution after Sulla, 1967, 100). His name is recorded a second time in col. 1, l. 10. In IG II² 3643, he is honoured as a descendant of Konon. A homonymous son was eponymos ca. 220 (Agora XV 472, l. 12). [3] The brothers Demosthenes and Attikos (ll. 12-13) serve on the Council together and were also ephebes together in (IG II² 2097, ll. 235-236). This is a common pattern in Imperial-period Athens, reflecting the importance of the family in public life and indicating that Councillors were no longer selected by lottery (on appointment to the Council, see SEG 29.127, ll. 94-101 with notes). [4] The name Megalinos (col. i, l. 23) suggests a Euboian or Boiotian origin. [5] The name Molossios (col. ii, l. 24) suggests links to the Molossians of Epirus. [6] The deme Phyrnesioi or Phyrrhinesioi is one of a number of demes known only from second-century AD inscriptions (thirteen members are recorded by the Athenian Onomasticon). On these demes, see J.
