[1] This is a marble funerary lekythos (see AIUK 4.6 (BM, funerary), no. 44). The relief depicts a standing female on the left holding her mantle open before her face in the gesture of anakalypsis (unveiling), associated with married women. In front of her, a bearded male seated on a chair in the centre, extends his right hand in the gesture of dexiosis to Phaidron, who is standing in front of him on the right, dressed in a himation and clean-shaven. He is likely the dead son of this unnamed couple, whose identities may have been discernible from other monuments within the family tomb plot (peribolos). Phaidron is a rare name at Athens, with just one other attestation in the 5th century BC (IG I³ 1303). The deceased is probably a relative of the similarly named Phaidronides who appears in Agora XVII 997.
